NYBG 2019 Holiday Train Show

More than a model train show, it presents an artful recreation of New York City landmarks in small scale, courtesy of Paul Busse’s team from Applied Imagination. Using natural materials such as twigs, bark, stems, fruit, seeds, fungus, and pine cones, the Applied Imagination team creates replicas of some of the city’s most famous landmarks, 175 in all, from the Empire State Building to the original Yankee Stadium. Zipping along past the landmarks are model trains of different gauges, from steam engines to 19th century streetcars, freight trains and passenger trains. They travel on overhead trestles, race through dense plantings, cross countless bridges and generally add a welcome sense of movement. This year’s exhibit, which debuted on November 23, showcases Central Park and runs through Sunday, January 26, 2020. This year’s Holiday Train Show features new replicas of Central Park’s iconic architectural treasures, including Belvedere Castle, the Dairy, the Old Bandstand, the Angel of the Waters sculpture atop the Bethesda Fountain, and two pedestrian bridges. They are arrayed in a tableau with existing Central Park replicas in NYBG’s collection, including the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theater. In addition, famous New York buildings that are either adjacent to the park or just inside it will be on display, including the Plaza Hotel, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Rose Center for Earth and Space, part of the American Museum of Natural History.
